Larry D. Capehart, age 79 of La Cygne, Kan., passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018, at his home under Hospice care after a long year of battling cancer. He was born Aug. 31, 1939, to George F. and Bertha A. Capehart in La Cygne. He attended grade and high school there and graduated in 1957.

In 1958 he joined the United States Army and served proudly for the USA, mostly in France, where he enjoyed riding his motorcycle to tour as many places as he could.

After his tour was finished, he worked with Warren as a long haul truck driver and bought property in Montana where his daughter Celeste was born. There he cut his own lumber and milled it. He also cooked with his mother in a restaurant in Jacksonville, Fla. He was a member of Boilermakers Local Union No. 83 here in Kansas until he retired in 2002.

His hobbies, or things he liked to do, were hunting, fishing, grilling and spending time with his dogs and cattle, which all became his pets. He visited family at his discretion. He enjoyed the regular meetings with the Rusty Zipper Gang.

Together, he and Evelyn would go to the garden and enjoy sitting on the tailgate of the pickup to peel and eat cucumbers fresh from the garden. Of course, he was the one sitting on the tailgate, while she picked. They spent many hours, doing things or not doing anything. Larry loved his grandkids and family, though he might not have always agreed with them. He thought he was especially blessed when he could be present when great grandson David James was born. It was love at first sight. He would have been Celeste’s first grandchild.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Celeste and husband Wayne Shelton; four brothers, George, Curtis, Duane and Warren Capehart; one sister, Jean Bowman; and many friends.

Larry is survived by his wife Evelyn of the home; one brother, Bill Capehart, Raymore, Mo.; three sons, Shawn Hite, La Cygne, Shane Hite and wife Alaina, Butler, Mo., and Robert Hite, El Dorado Springs, Mo.; grandchildren Heather Rose and Brandon, Colorado Springs, Colo., David Rose and wife Kari, Mt. Vernon, Mo., Madison Estes, Joplin, Mo., Andrew Carlson and wife Sara, Louisville, Ky., Evie, Sami and Jackson Hite, Butler, and Kaitlyne and Jacob Hite ,Olathe, Kan.; and great grandchildren David James Rose, Mt. Vernon, and Kolton and Elija Carlson, Louisville. Many other family and friends will greatly miss this special man.

Funeral service was Monday, Sept. 17, 2018, at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, La Cygne Chapel. Burial was in the Jingo Cemetery.

Contributions are suggested to Mercy Hospice. Online condolences for the family can be left at www.schneiderfunerals.com.
